I have the campus of the City University as one of the most enjoyable ride sites in Madrid. When I was a college student, years ago, I used to walk on the outskirts of the classes, the long journey from the Law School to the Plaza del Callao around which had, by then, my home. Currently I am content to walk sometimes in the Avenida Complutense, mingling with the students or with those who will play the sport of cycling. My favorite places are the Botanical Gardens Alfonso XIII, indispensable visit in spring and autumn, and the nearby Museum of Costume in the Avenida de Juan de Herrera. Unfortunately

If evil is general and widespread throughout the grounds, there is nevertheless a particular site that features a special degradation. I refer to the monument known as the "The Torchbearers" at the Plaza de Ramón y Cajal from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Medicine and Dentistry of the mouth just behind Metro Ciudad Universitaria.
This monument, " The torchbearers " (The Torch Bearer) was carved by Mrs. Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), famous American artist, wife of the American hispanist Archer Milton Huntington, founder of the Hispanic Society of America based in New York. The modeling of this group sculpture took three long years and more than one's cast aluminum. Features a naked young rider restraining his horse to take out of the hands of an old exhausted the symbolic heritage of Western civilization and transmitted from generation to generation. Donated by the artist to the Villa de Madrid was inaugurated on May 15, 1955 in the presence of Huntington marriage.
There are several other copies, aluminum and bronze, this statue: four are in the U.S. and one in Spain, in Valencia. I recently passed through the square where the latter is located and I could see what good condition
But the monument of the City University today announces the deplorable aspect that can be seen in the accompanying photograph which obviates simple vision description.

I do not know which institution was responsible for the conservation of this monument, if you are the Rector of the Complutense University and the Polytechnic, the City of Madrid or all three together, but what I am sure that those who appropriate competition brings al fresco civilization Western cultural heritage, the image of the university and public decency.
I read just yesterday (November 26, 2009) that the Moncloa Campus has been recognized by the International Excellence Campus. I do not know in detail the proposed project is to understand the commitment of promoters to improve the functioning of the University in all aspects. Rectorate suggest to start their performances rewarded with the most elemental, this is the reorganization of campus space and in particular to take urgent necessary measures to those with a sensitivity that we passed this monument because of the generosity of a foreign artist we are not falling as English and citizens the world of shame seeing the deplorable state it is his legacy.
